R.E.M.'s fantastic debut was filled with ringing guitars and nonsense lyrics and low "Murmurs" from singer Michael Stipe. "Radio Free Europe" is that fast, catchy single that is found on pretty much any debut, ever. "Pilgrimage" is....Laughing has a slow, driving acoustic guitar. "Talk About The Passion" has bouncy guitars and more of Stipe's "Murmurs". "Moral Kiosk" is R.E.M.'s first big "anthem". Buck's guitar is fast, and Berry's drumming is tribal. "Perfect Circle" is hard to listen to..as Stipe's vocals are so low. "Catapult" is absolute nonsense. "Sitting Still" is a little droning number that will grow on you over time. "9-9" may be the best track on here, with its echoing vocals and heavy drum and bass."Shaking Through" is a mass of acoustic guitar, and "We Walk" is beautifully shimmering guitar. "West Of The Fields" Shows what may happen on later R.E.M. albums.
This may become 5 stars on a second listen...but its 4 1/2 now.
Top 3:
